Seminar MIB: Status MIB termaktub dalam perlembagaan.
UBD, Tungku, Gadong-Khamis 19 Mei 2011; Status Negara Brunei Darussalam sebagai Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) memang tepat kerana ia termaktub dalam perlembagaan negara ini yang menjadi tunggak serta asas kepada pembentukan dan pemerintahan Kerajaan Kebawah Duli Yang Maha Mulia Paduka Seri Baginda Sultan dan Yang Di-Pertuan Negara Brunei Darussalam.
Ia adalah satu wadah memberi kuasa pemerintahan sendiri dan menjadi landasan perjuangan mengambil alih setentunya kedaulatan dan kemerdekaan Negara Brunei Darussalam.
Penolong Peguamcara Negara, Jabatan Peguam Negara, Dayang Naimah binti Mohd Ali menyatakan perkara itu semasa membentangkan kertas kerja ke-13 di Seminar Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB).
Beliau menambah, dengan agama Islam sebagai agama rasmi negara ini, tentu sesuai jika ketua pentadbir serta jawatan-jawatan yang terpenting pemegangnya menganut agama Islam supaya pentadbirannya tidak menyalahi ajaran agama Islam.
Konsep Beraja pula menurutnya, merupakan sistem pemerintahan turun temurun yang meletakkan raja sebagai payung kepada bangsa dan negara di samping sumber sumber kekuasaan serta kewibawaan pemerintah dan kerajaann.
Kedudukan konsep MIB telah dengan secara spesifik terangnya, diperkukuhkan lagi dalam perlembagaan negara iaitu dalam peruntukan yang mengkategorikan jenis undang-undang usul dan 'partition' yang tidak boleh dibahaskan tanpa titah perkenan.
Beliau berkata, konsep-konsep MIB juga terdapat dalam undang-undang bertulis yang lain secara ringkas mengenai konsep Melayu, undang-undang tahapkerakyatan Negara Brunei Darussalam dan menetapkan ketulinan Melayu Brunei dengan kuasa mutlak undang-undang yang dikhususkan kepada puak-puak jati Melayu iaitu Belait, Bisaya, Brunei, Dusun, Kedayan, Murut dan Tutong.
Manakala, orang lain yang bukan dari bangsa atau puak yang diiktiraf oleh undang-undang sebagai puak jati dari bangsa Melayu Brunei hanya akan diterima menjadi rakyat secara berdaftar dan penaungan ditentukan oleh syarat-syarat tertentu.

Melayu Islam Beraja (MIB) telah menjadi darah daging anak Brunei sejak wujudnya institusi Kesultanan Brunei Darussalam sejak 600 tahun.
Menurut Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia (Dr.) Haji Awang Abdul Aziz bin Begawan Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Seri Paduka Haji Awang Umar, kemerdekaan negara merupakan sebuah proses pengambilan alih semula identiti sebagai orang Brunei.
Ini katanya, negara telah mengalami penurunan kenegaraannya pada abad ke-19 dengan kehilangan banyak wilayah-wilayah dan daerah-daerah.
"Maka cabaran yang sebenar semasa di ambang hari kemerdekaan kita itu dulu dan pada waktu-waktu awal-awal kemerdekaan negara ialah untuk mencorak dan membina semula identiti orang Brunei," jelas Yang Berhormat Pehin.
Yang Berhormat memberitahu hal itu dalam Kertas Kerja Perdana MIB yang berjudul 'Cara Hidup Masyarakat Brunei " di Seminar MIB sempena Sambutan MIB sempena Sambutan Ulang Tahun Hari Kebangsaan ke-27 di Dewan Canselor Universiti Brunei Darussalam di sini.
Yang Berhormat menjelaskan, kemerdekaan yang sebenar bukanlah pengisytiharan semata-semata atau peralihan kuasa pentadbiran kuasa, tetapi kemerdekaan yang sebenar hanya tercapai apabila negara berjaya melepaskan diri daripada jajahan budaya yang menakluki sebuah negara dan isi kandungannya dengan mengikat corak pemikiran dengan rantai budaya asing.
"Apa yang harus diingati dan mesti dijelaskan, bukanlah kita membangkang gaya budaya orang asing semata-mata kerana ianya asing. Tetapi kita harus mempertahankan identiti diri kerana tanpa usaha pemeliharaan ini kita akan kehilangan jati diri dan tenggelam dalam lautan budaya buatan atau artificial culture, barang siapa yang menafikan asalnya, maka tiada asal baginya," tambah Yang Berhormat.
Orang Brunei, kata Yang Berhormat, adalah berbangsa Melayu yang beragama Islam dan mempunyai sistem politil secara Beraja, Melayu kerana kita orang Melayu.
Adapun sistem Beraja , memang sebahagian daripada ciri-ciri kemelayuan, perlu disedari bahawa bukanlah dimaksudkan bahawa sistem Beraja itu akan menghasilkan kejayaan-kejayaan seperti apa yang telah tercapai di Negara Brunei Darussalam jika ianya dilaksanakan di negara-negara lain.

Bandar Seri Begawan now has a new landmark attraction at the BSB Waterfront, which officially opened last night with full fanfare, a vibrant spectacle witnessed by thousands.
His Royal Highness Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minster's Office and Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah graced the official opening ceremony. Also present was HRH Prince 'Abdul Malik together with cabinet ministers and foreign dignitaries.
The project, which is part of the BSB Development Masterplan is the result of the concerted efforts of several government agencies including the Municipal Department, Department of Town and Country Planning and the Brunei Museums Department working hand-in-hand with private sector companies. The project took almost three years to complete with a budget of B$5.6 million.
The 1.8 hectare site, located in the heart of the capital Bandar Seri Begawan overlooking the historic Kampung Ayer is seen as a welcome addition to the evolving Bandar Seri Begawan skyline.
The highlight of the night was the colourful floats procession that lit Sungai Brunei with Kampung Ayer as the backdrop, a display of a kind similar to the resplendent river river parade (kenaikan berhias/kapal berhias) held in 60's and 70's during national occasions such as His Majesty's brithday celebrations.
Crowds gathered as early as 4;30 pm to witness the momentous.

WATERFRONT BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN

Brunei keen to join neighbours to tackle Haze
MIRI (Bernama)- The collaboration among ASEAN countries has resulted in a greatly reduced impact of transboundary haze over the last few years, Malaysia's Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas said yesterday.
He said member countries' compliance to the agreement on transboundary haze pollution, signed in 2002, and the regular meetings of ASEAN ministerial steering committee on haze, had contributed to a better understanding to address the issue.
To date, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore are spearheading the effort to install air-monitoring stations in the Riau and Jambi provinces in Indonesia.
"We are looking forward to having more areas of collaborations (in the future)," he said, adding that Brunei had already indicated an interest to be involved in the collaboration.
"I have been in this ministry for three years. You notice that what we have been lucky that we didn't experience what we had experienced in 1997 to 1998, which was a very bad haze," he said after attending the Miri Division disaster relief management committee.
He said the collaborations that began with the sharing of strategies to combat illegal burning activities had also been enhanced to include joint efforts in installation of weather and air monitoring systems.
Meanwhile Uggah said the sum of RM1 million had been spent to build five tube wells as a measure to maintain the water level in peat soil areas in Miri. He said peat soil is known to be a combustible in dry conditions and the risks were apparent especially in the current dry weather.
In addition, he said 13 check dams were also constructed at a cost of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 each as another measure to maintain the water level in peat soil areas as well as to provide water source for combating peat fire. Awatch tower had also been completed at a cost of under RM 400,000 to be used for monitoring peat soil areas, he added. -Borneo Bulletin 17 May 2011.

Meanwhile Uggah said the sum of RM1 million had been spent to build five tube wells as a measure to maintain the water level in peat soil areas in Miri. He said peat soil is known to be a combustible in dry conditions and the risks were apparent especially in the current dry weather.
In addition, he said 13 check dams were also constructed at a cost of between RM5,000 and RM10,000 each as another measure to maintain the water level in peat soil areas as well as to provide water source for combating peat fire. Brunei Press launches 'Bagus!' magazine

Leading publisher and printer in the country, Brunei Press Sdn Bhd, launched its latest publication called "Bagus!" during a ceremony at the Orchid Garden Hotel yesterday.
Bagus! takes a "personal and fun" approach with real experiences and recommendations shared by readers. Supported by Brunei Tourism Development Board, the free magazines is targeted at residents and visitors to Brunei Darussalam.
With a circulation of over 60,000, Bagus! will be the highest circulating magazines in Brunei. After May 5, Bagus! will be available at Brunei International Airport and other entry points to Brunei. The free magazine wil also be available at Brunei Tourism, leading cafes, retail outlets and tour agencies across the Sultanate.

Brunei scores high in tech ranking.
Brunei Darussalam has farred better in the usage of computing and communication technology, according to an annual study issued Tuesday by the World Economic Forum.
Brunei stood 14th for Internet users per 100 population and also in 14th position for cellular subscriptions with data, 23rd place for households with personal computers, 27th position for quality of math and science education, 28th for government success in ICT promotion, 30th in government readiness in ICT and 31st for quality educational system.
Overall, Brunei finished in 57th place in the study's comparison of 138 countries. Sweden was first, followed by Singapore, Finland and Switzerland.
It also means that Brunei has been ranked 57 out of 138 countries in network readiness index for 2010-2011 compared to 63rd position in 2009-2010. Our global competitiveness index is 28th for 2010-2011.

Japanese prime Minister Naoto Kan has sent his appreciation for the solidarity and support rendered by the government and people of Brunei Darussalam and other countries.
The Prime Minister said, one month has passed since an earthquake of unprecedented scale struck Japan, taking thousands of precious lives. Even today, evacuation shelters are still the only refuge for more than 150,000 people.
In the tsunami-devastated regions there was no food, no water, no electricity and the survivors had no communications. At that desperate time people from around the world rallied to our side bringing hope and inspiring courage.
Every blanket and every cup of hot soup brought warmth and strength to the cold and exhausted who had lost everything. Rescue teams heroically searched for survivors in the heaps of broken rubble, while medical teams worked tirelessly caring for the injured.
We are still receiving a tremendous outpouring of encouragement, prayers and support from people worldwide. We deeply appreciate the 'kizuna' (bonds of friendship) our friends around the world have shown and I want to thank every nation, entity, and you personally, from bottom of my heart.
Reconstruction has already begun and we are putting every effort into stabilising the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant.
Through our own efforts and with the help of the global community, Japan will recover and come back even stronger. We will then repay you for your generous aid.
With this in our hearts, we now stand together dedicated to rebuilding the nation. As our feelings of deep gratitude to you grow into feelings of hope, we, the people of Japan, express our sincere thanks to you all.

Japan economy, Toyota feel effects of disaster
Tokyo (AFP)- The impact of Japan's earthquake and nuclear crisis rippled through the economy Wednesday, when the government downgraded its outlook and Toyota announced temporary plant shutdowns overseas.
Another strong aftershock the northeast from 9.0-magnitude quake that struck the northeast coast over month ago hit the disaster region, further fraying nerves amid tense stop-and-go containment efforts at a stricken atomic plant.
Toyota, the world's largest auto maker, said parts shortages would force it to halt production for several days at five European plants over the next two months after announcing similar steps at most of its 14 North America plants.
The International Monetary Fund on Monday lowered its 2011 growth forecast for Japan- which has long battled sluggish demand, deflation, and high public debt- to 1.4 from 1.6 per cent, citing "large uncertainties".
Japan estimates rebuilding will cost up to 25 trillion yen ($295 billion).

Malaysia Airlines hit by fuel cost, Japan's crisis
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (AP)- Malaysia Airlines says jet fuel price and Japan's catastrophe will have a "negative impact" on its operations but stops short of saying if it will suffer a loss in the first quarter.
Managing Director Azmil Zahruddin says the carrier has raised fuel surcharges by more than 10 per cent since late 2010 and may increase further if fuel costs continue to soar. It has hedged 25 per cent of its fuel needs this year at about $90 a barrel.
He said Wednesday the airline has cut flights to Japan from 11 to seven times a week after March 11 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis severly crimped inbound ttravel.
The airline alos trimmed overall expansion plans with seat capacity to still increase but much less than targeted 10 per cent.

Singapore (AFP)-Singapore Airlines (SIA) will cut two of its seven weekly direct flights to Los Angeles next month due to weakening demand, the airline's spokeman told AFP Wednesday.
"We are temporarily reducing from seven to five," SIA spokesman Nicholas Ionides said, insisting the cuts were "about matching capacity to demand".
Ionides said that SIA was cancelling its Singapore-Los Angeles flights on Tuesday and Wednesday from May 3, adding that the two "tend to have less demand" compared with those for the rest of the week.
SIA uses the four-engine Airbus A345 aircraft for its non-stop flights to Los Angeles, which are wholly business-class. When asked if rising oil prices were a factor in the flight reductions, Ionides said the specific decision to implement the cuts was taken solely in response to the "supply and demand situation".
